Education/Awareness:

A new section has been added to the Diagnosis and Treatment page. This section is "Types of Surgery Performed for Pancreatic Cancer". It describes the basic differences between different surgeries on the pancreas and when each one might be appropriate. We hope that our visitors find this information helpful in their research.

Education/Awareness: Radio City Re-Opening and the Lustgarten Gala

When Radio City Music Hall in NYC re-opened in October, those in attendance were also attending a gala fundraiser for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. The evening opened with a video produced for the foundation about the urgent need for research in pancreatic cancer. The gala is going to be aired on NBC this Saturday, December 18, 1999 at 10 PM EST. Preliminary news from NBC is that the video (featuring among others, the PTSG's own Robert Radinsky, PhD and James Abbruzzese, MD) will be shown on TV. Check your local listings and set your VCRs!

Education/Awareness: Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

M. D. Anderson's participation in Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month has been an overwhelming success. The Learning Center reports such a great interest in pancreatic cancer materials that many newsletters and brochures ran out in only a couple of weeks. We are working with the NCI, the Lustgarten Foundation, and our own Scientific Publications department to ensure an increased supply of these materials throughout the year. M. D. Anderson's attendance at "An Evening With the Stars" was noted in the employee newsletter, The Messenger. (Our thanks to editor David Berkowitz.) For those MDACC patients and visitors waiting for purple pins, they arrived a few moments ago and will be available at your next visit. (Thank you, Marsha Garil at PanCAN!) Our entire staff at M. D. Anderson is eager to participate in Awareness Month next year, and we promise to make it better than before!
