Multi-Institutional Phase II Study of Preoperative Rapid-Fractionation External-Beam Radiation Therapy and Concomitant Gemzar (gemcitabitne) for Patients with Resectable Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreatic Head

Recent evidence suggesting activity for gemcitabine in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer combined with recent evidence supporting its use as a radiation sensitizer provide the rationale for the combination of external-beam radiation therapy and gemcitabine. Previous work from our institution has demonstrated the safety of gemcitabine when delivered in seven weekly infusions. This protocol builds upon our recently completed phase I study of Gemzar-based chemoradiation for patients with localized adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.
