2013 Charles A. LeMaistre Lecture in Oncology and Cancer Prevention: Dr. Michael Sporn

2013 Charles A. LeMaistre Lecture in Oncology and Cancer Prevention: Dr. Michael Sporn "What is Cancer and How Can We Prevent It?"

Dr. Michael Sporn is a world-renowned researcher and a pioneer in cancer prevention. Since 1957, Dr. Sporn has been investigating mechanisms to suppress the process of carcinogenesis that ultimately leads to life-threatening invasive cancer. In 1976 he coined the phrase “chemoprevention” to describe the use of  natural or synthetic molecules to suppress or reverse premalignant states, with the goal of preventing the eventual development of invasive cancer.

Dr. Sporn has held various positions at the NCI from 1960–1995, including head of the Lung Cancer Unit and Chief of both the Lung Cancer Branch and Laboratory of Chemoprevention. In 1995 he joined Dartmouth Medical School as Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine where he continues his research on triterpenoids, rexinoids and other chemopreventive agents that resemble steroids in their multi-targeted, multi-functional mechanisms of action.
