2014 Charles A. LeMaistre Lecture in Oncology and Cancer Prevention: Dr. Patricia Ganz "Understanding the Late Effects of Cancer Treatment: Host Factors and Personal Vulnerability"

Dr. Patricia Ganz is a medical oncologist, breast cancer researcher and renowned expert on quality of life issues facing cancer patients and survivors. Among her many awards and accomplishments, Dr. Ganz is a founding member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, was selected as the first recipient of the ASCO Research Professorship in Comparative Effectiveness Research, holds an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2007.

She is currently Distinguished University Professor, Schools of Medicine and Public Health and Director, Cancer Prevention and Control Research at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles.

In her presentation, Dr. Ganz will discuss how cancer treatment can contribute to long-term, sometimes decades-long, changes including second cancers, organ damage, premature aging, and reproductive problems. She will particularly focus on some of the biological mechanisms associated with the long-term effects of cancer treatment and how host factors may influence these effects as well as cancer treatment outcomes in survivors.
