Speaker: Dr. Maher Karam-Hage
Speaker Bio: Graduated from medical school in 1993 at Universidad Francisco Marroquin Guatemala, Central America. Conducted his general psychiatry training, then addiction psychiatry sub-specialty and subsequently a Neuro-psychopharmacology research fellowship at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Michigan, US. from 1994-2000. Served as medical director of the University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services (UMATS) from 2000-2006. His interest in addiction is focused on the specific areas of alcohol, tobacco and comorbid disorders. He has received multiple awards and recognitions. He is member of several medical and subspecialty societies. He has published over 45 peer reviewed and invited papers, in addition to 6 book chapters. He has lectured locally and internationally and has presented over 40 abstracts and poster presentations at national and international meetings. He has been Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator or study physician on more than 25 clinical trials. His team is currently recruiting subjects in 4 active clinical trials on treatment for smoking cessation or alcohol. Currently a Professor of Psychiatry at the Departments of Behavioral Science and of Psychiatry at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston Texas, USA. Medical Director of the Tobacco Treatment Program at MD Anderson Since 2006. Lead faculty and course director of the MD Anderson Certification as Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS). Accredited July 2017. Secretary and Treasurer of Texas chapter of the Society of Addiction Medicine (TSAM) 2011-2015, and currently president of TSAM since 2015.
