“Use of brain imaging techniques in the study of nicotine dependence

As a result of major advances in brain imaging techniques, reactions in the brain to emotional and drug-related stimuli can now be studied with great accuracy. Methods such as high-density electroencephalogrophy (EEG) and functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) can be used to evaluate the cognitive and affective responses in the brains of addicted individuals. Evaluation of such responses in addicts can be used to help develop more successful detoxification interventions. Here, data comparing smokers’ brain reactions to emotional and drug-related cues will be presented.
