Challenging Conversations in End of Life Care

How to effectively initiate and manage discussions about end of life care with patients and families
How to effectively respond to strong emotions
How to effectively respond to questions like, “Does this means you’re giving up on me?”
 
This workshop is open to all interested clinicians who wish to hone their end-of-life discussions with patients and families.
 
Examples and illustrative situations will be constructed with audience participation. Basic principles for effective communication in end-of-life discussion will be presented and practiced.
 
Objectives: 
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
 
Demonstrate effective strategies to initiate and manage discussions about end of life care with patients and families.
 
Apply methods to effectively respond to strong emotions.
 
List strategies to respond appropriately to difficult questions relating to end-of-life scenarios.
