Distinguished Alumnus Award & Lecture

In 1980, the institution established the Distinguished Alumnus Award to recognize a prominent individual who has made distinguished contributions to his or her respective field. The recipient of this award is selected from nominations received by the Alumni & Faculty Association Steering Committee. Candidates must have trained at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. An individual from within the institution knowledgeable about the candidate’s area of expertise must also participate in and endorse the selection process.

Speaker Bio: Dr. James A. Purdy is currently a Professor Emeritus at two Departments of Radiation Oncology, one at the University of California Davis (UCD) and another at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). He is a product of and has had a long association with The University of Texas system, having attended the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) and receiving his Master’s and PhD degrees in Physics from UT Austin, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Medical Physics at MD Anderson. His research efforts in three-dimensional treatment planning/delivery, and quality assurance have had a profound effect on radiation oncology. The training of residents (physicians and medical physicists) has also been of special interest to Dr. Purdy, having overseen the training of several hundred residents and mentoring numerous junior faculty. Many of his protégés are now in leadership positions nationwide, including some at MD Anderson.
