Speaker: Yolonda Colson, M.D.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Colson is an attending cardiothoracic surgeon within the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Director of the Women’s Lung Cancer Program, and a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. She is a Director on the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Her academic training includes a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an MD from Mayo Medical School and a PhD in Immunology/Pathology from University of Pittsburgh. Her surgical residency was at University of Pittsburgh before training in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is a Recipient of the George H.A. Clowes, Jr. Research Career Development Award from the American College of Surgeons, the first recipient of the Michelle Kessler Leadership Award in Women’s Health, a recipient of the Edward M. Kennedy Award for Health Care Innovation from CIMIT as Team Leader for the Cancer Advanced Technology Team and the 2011 Women in Science Honoree by the Boston Museum of Science. She is named on two joint patents and has received over twenty grants including four R29 and R01 awards from the National Institute of Health and National Cancer Institute. With funding support from the NIH/NCI, the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), and the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Colson's research focuses on the development of unique mechanisms of polymer and nanoparticle drug delivery aimed at preventing cancer recurrence, and the investigation of novel methods to identify hidden tumor that has spread to nearby lymph nodes. Many of the more than 25 residents and students formally mentored in her laboratory have garnered national recognition. She has over 90 peer-reviewed publications highlighting her prior work in transplantation and her most recent investigations in polymer-mediated drug delivery.
