Advance Care Planning: A Process of Communication

Target Audience and Educational Objectives:

After attending this activity, the target audience of Physicians, Clinical and Research, Faculty, APNs, Nurses, Social Workers and Trainees should be able to:

·          Provide evidence-based specialized care for cancer patients facing emotional, psychosocial, and financial challenges (knowledge, performance, competence);

·          Develop effective ways to encourage healthy behaviors in cancer patients who self-medicate themselves with alcohol/tobacco or other drugs to reduce stress (knowledge, competence, performance, patient outcomes);

·          Evaluate psychological practice in the larger healthcare setting for evidence-based approaches, including evolving standards and ongoing national and local healthcare reform (knowledge, competence, performance).

After attending “Advance Care Planning: A Process of Communication” the learners should be able to:

1.     Describe what advance care planning is and why it is important.

2.     Discuss the advance care planning process of communication across the continuum of care.

3.     Identify current trends in advance care planning with cancer patients.

4.     List the advance care planning resources available to our patients, their families and caregivers, as well as to our faculty and staff.

 

Accreditation/Credit Designation:

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing

 The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association – Approver, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation..

Social Work

 The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is an approved provider of Continuing Education Unites (CEUs) by the Texas Board of Social Work Examiners.  1.0 social work CEU will be provided.
