This talk will discuss challenges facing healthcare institutions that wish to improve communication between providers and patients.  It will discuss Cleveland Clinic’s implementation of a communication-skills program for physicians and the key elements that led to its success

This lecture provides:
Ø 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility
After attending this activity, the target audience of physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dieticians, PhDs and other medical staff should be able to:
 
• Demonstrate basic principles and strategies that can be used to promote an increase in patient satisfaction with the overall care provided (knowledge, competence, performance, patient outcomes).
• Discuss options for treatment plans with patients that will be more congruent with what the patient wants and increase patient compliance to treatment plan (knowledge, competence, performance, patient outcomes).
• Interpret patient emotions and employ basic principles and strategies to acknowledge these emotions (knowledge, competence, performance).
• Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with colleagues (knowledge, competence, performance).

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
