Data Analysis

  • Consultation with researchers to fully understand the goal of a study
  • Determination of the appropriate statistical analysis methods to be used given a particular data set
  • Normalization of microarray data
  • Analysis of differential gene expression data from microarray images
  • Selection of statistical software that is appropriate for the analytical task at hand
  • Descriptive analysis including graphs and charts that may be used to present information
  • Presentation of results verbally, graphically, or in the form of a report
  • Input, when needed, on the statistical section of the research manuscript

Biostatistical consultation is sought for therapeutic, diagnostic, prevention and intervention studies within M. D. Anderson. Biostatisticians have most recently been active as co-investigators in the study of:

  • cDNA microarray analysis of B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • maintenance treatment for multiple myeloma
  • therapy for estrogen receptor-positive, node-positive breast cancer
  • markers for extent of disease involvement in breast cancer
  • tumor ablation surgery
  • diet modulation and colon cell proliferation and apoptosis in rat models
  • prognostic markers in metastatic melanoma
  • patient response to chemotherapy in newly-diagnosed acute myelogenous
leukemia or refractory anemia with excess of blasts or in transformation to leukemia
  • dioxolane nucleoside activity in advanced leukemia
  • conditioning for patients with hematological malignancies undergoing
    allogeneic progenitor cell transplantation
  • angiogenesis in breast cancer lymph node metastasis and patient outcome
  • surgery for abdominal metastases of cutaneous melanoma
  • prognostic markers in stage I non-small cell lung cancer
  • dietary fish oil and apoptosis in rat colon cells during tumor initiation
  • high-dose chemotherapy and blood cell autografts in high-risk primary breast cancer
  • terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase expression in acute myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplasia
  • prognostic markers in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • hyper-CVAD therapy for adult acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • modulations in the bronchial epithelium of smokers
  • chemoprevention of squamous metaplasia and dysplasia of bronchial epithelium
  • post-radiotherapy chemotherapy for glioblastoma multiforme
  • prevention of second primary tumors in stage I non-small cell lung cancer
  • neoadjuvant chemotherapy for soft tissue sarcomas
  • cognitive function patients with recurrent malignant glioma
  • radiotherapy dose escalation for prostate cancer
  • early detection of relapse in chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • biochemoprevention therapy for premalignant lesions of the head and neck
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced apoptosis in colorectal cancer cells
  • cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition in familial adenomatous polyposis
  • head and neck tumorigenesis
  • liver resection surgery
  • therapy for advanced androgen-independent prostatic cancer
