Whole Blood Donations

Family members, friends, and others can donate whole blood for M. D. Anderson patients. In addition to general donations, there are two special types of whole blood donations:

  • In a directed donation, the donor gives blood for use by a specific patient. The donor must have a blood type that is compatible with the patient's blood type. Before the donor gives blood, the patient--or, when necessary, a family member--must sign a form giving permission for the directed donation. These forms are available from the Blood Bank and at various locations throughout the hospital and clinic.

Directed donations must be made at the main Blood Bank location.

  • In a replacement donation, the donor gives blood for use by any patient. In exchange for this donation, the patient designated by the donor will receive a credit toward his or her medical bill. Replacement donors can be of any blood type.

Replacement donations for M. D. Anderson patients can be made at any Blood Bank throughout the United States that participates in the Blood Credit Program. At the time of donation, indicate the patient's full name, hospital name, and medical record number, if known. The blood bank will then transfer the credit to M. D. Anderson. Ask your local blood bank if they are part of this program or call (713) 792-7788 for this information.

Platelet Donations

Many M. D. Anderson patients use platelets on a daily basis. Family members, friends, and others can donate platelets for M. D. Anderson patients. Whether the patient actually receives the donor's platelets depends on the patient's blood type and current health status. In any case, the patient will receive a credit toward his or her medical bill.

Platelet donations take about 2-1/2 to 3 hours and must be scheduled in advance.

Platelet donations can be made at the following locations. Please call the location for specific donation times and other pre-donation information.

Donating Your Own Blood before Surgery

Before surgery, some patients may be able to have their own blood stored for future transfusion needs. This is called "autologous blood donation and transfusion." Patients interested in this option should talk with their attending physician.

Blood Drives

Whole blood is collected primarily at mobile blood drives held by businesses, schools, churches, and other interested groups throughout the Houston metropolitan area that want to support M. D. Anderson patients or patients in other facilities.

Blood drives can be held any day of the week at a time that is convenient for the sponsoring group. M. D. Anderson has several large mobile blood drive coaches. Anyone interested in learning more about the mobile blood drive program may contact one of the Blood Bank's community representatives at (713) 792-7788 Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
