Surgical Pathology Fellowship
The Department of Pathology offers a training program in Surgical Pathology with special emphasis on the pathology of neoplastic diseases. This fellowship program meets the requirements for the fifth year of training in pathology. A large volume of material provides an unusual opportunity for in-depth experience and the development of proficiency in the diagnosis of neoplastic diseases. In addition to all subspecialties of surgical pathology and autopsy services, rotations are available in electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostic, and various research laboratories.

Also offered are four, non-accredited, subspecialty fellowships in these areas: Breast, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, and Head and Neck Pathology. These training fellowships, although non-accredited, are related directly to our accredited Surgical Pathology Fellowship.

All fellows are required to conduct an investigative study under the supervision of staff pathologists. An elective period is also provided. Participation in intra- and interdepartmental conferences is emphasized. Because of the specialized and demanding nature of the material encountered, the program is best suited for the individual who has already obtained a good background in general anatomic pathology.

To be considered for an interview, a file must be started before March 1 of the year prior to the intended fellowship, which begins July 1. Please send an updated CV, completed application form, personal statement and three letters of recommendation to:

Chemical Pathology Fellowship
The Department of Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year training program in chemical pathology, which has an optional second year available for eligible candidates. The objective of the program is to prepare the fellow to function as the director of a clinical chemistry laboratory by becoming proficient in areas such as instrument/test selection, test implementation, interpretation of test results, familiarization with regulations and requirements governing laboratory accreditation, cost analysis, and personnel training. In addition, this program offers special opportunity to gain experience in the area of tumor markers and other cancer-related testing.

This program is affiliated with the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and the Texas Children's Hospital. Rotations will provide experience in areas to include special chemistry testing, general (high volume) chemistry testing, urinalysis, infectious disease screening, molecular diagnostics, toxicology, and HPLC. Fellows will also be involved in the preparation of interpretive reports and providing consultation to clinicians regarding test selection and interpretation. A research project must be completed under staff supervision for successful completion of the program.

A second year is available to the selected candidate who successfully completes the first year and is interested in an area of research or consultative activity.

Cytopathology Fellowship
The objective of this one-year fellowship is to provide a concentrated experience in diagnostic cytopathology including the interpretation of aspiration and exfoliative cytology, predominantly tumor pathology, performing superficial needle aspirations under staff supervision, and assisting in determining specimen adequacy on all deep needle aspirations. Close interaction with surgical pathology and submission of ancillary tests such as flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, electron microscopy, and image analysis are part of the valuation of many cytology specimens.

The fellow will participate in a number of teaching cytology conferences, have the opportunity to attend a variety of surgical pathology conferences, and be involved in a research project that must be completed for publication under staff supervision in order to qualify for certification. Supplementation of our pap smear cytology program is achieved through an affiliation with the Laboratory Corporation of America and a mandatory 400-slide gynecology cytology study set.

To be considered for an interview, a file must be started before March 1 of the year prior to the intended fellowship, which begins July 1. Please send an updated CV and three letters of recommendation to:

Dermatopathology Fellowship
The Dermatopathology Fellowship program is accredited by ACGME for 2 FTE positions. Our specimens range from punch and shave biopsies to large surgical excisions and lymphadenectomies. There are approximately 8000 specimens a year. A significant number of our cases represent diagnostic challenges, primarily in the oncologic area (carcinoma, melanoma, soft tissue tumors, and lymphoma involving the skin), as well as cancer and therapy-related processes, such as graft versus host disease. A very important and challenging part of the volume corresponds to cases, predominantly melanocytic lesions, coming from other institutions to be reviewed in our department prior to the patient's clinic appointment. The only area in which our department does not have an outstanding variety of cases is within the field of non-cancer-related inflammatory dermatosis. This deficit will be corrected by our fellow's attendance once a week to the regular daily dermatopathology signout at Baylor College of Medicine. A file must be established one year prior the year of intended fellowship. Please send an updated CV, personal statement, three (3) letter of recommendations and completed application form (http://www.mdanderson.org/pdf/TSS_Fulltime_GMEApp.pdf) to:
