Rajagopal Ramesh, Ph.D.

Dr. Rajagopal Ramesh, a native of India, received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, in 1994. His basic work involved studying the role of Hepatitis B virus in the cause of Hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, he has also worked on a vaccine trial for the prevention of hepatitis B infection in India. During his Ph.D. studies, he received a number of awards for his research findings. Dr. Ramesh's interest in cancer and in its prevention resulted in his joining Dr. Scott Freeman's laboratory at the Tulane University Medical Center, in New Orleans, Louisiana as a Post-doctoral Fellow. Dr. Ramesh has been instrumental in translating his pre-clinical findings to the clinic for the treatment of ovarian cancer and mesothelioma using the HSV-tk suicide gene therapy. He has numerous presentations and publications in high quality peer-viewed journals and also has won awards from various scientific committees. Dr. Ramesh has also co-authored several book chapters on suicide gene therapy. He is a member of several professional societies including the American Society of Gene Therapy and the American Association of Cancer Research. Dr. Ramesh joined U.T.M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in March of 1998, where his research field includes testing viral and non-viral vectors in cancer gene therapy. In 2001 he was promoted to the position of Assistant Professor.

Research Interests:

My area of research interest is in thoracic and gyneacological cancers. I am interested in three major aspects with each cancer type and they are as follows:

  1. Developing strategies to deliver therapeutic genes;
  2. To develop appropriate animal models for each cancer type; and
  3. To study the pathobiology of tumor killing following gene delivery.
