Services:

  • Launched a new tablet optimized website
  • Conducted over 400 expert searches for clients
  • Answered over 5,000 requests for information from in person, online and chat requests
  • Reached over 3,000 with classes, consultations, orientations, and tours
  • Received over 93,900 in-person visits to our main and south campus locations
  • Initiated webinar educational sessions using Adobe Connect
  • Populated and activated LibAnswers, a knowledge-based resource for frequently asked questions
  • Launched self-scheduling of our group study rooms launched using LibCal
Collections:

  • Provided access to 144 databases
  • Increased our electronic journal subscriptions to 5,474
  • Increased our electronic book titles to 10,093
  • Received 11 new accessions in the Historical Resources Center for a total of 10.92  linear feet of material
  • Collected a total of  23 new oral histories, with our first iBook prototype in development
  • Circulated over 3,700 items from our print collection

Events:

  • The South Campus Library  opened in October 2011
  • The Library completed a year-long Red Tag project which culminated in receiving an Act Recognition at the annual Celebrating Improvement at MD Anderson event
  • The Library hosted TedMedLive 2012 with a reception on the last day to celebrate Dr Chin’s presentation
  • The Library hosted Ask the Dietician  in conjunction with Employee Wellness in celebration of National Nutrition Month
  • The Research Medical Library became a Resource Library with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/South Central Region
Research, Collaboration, and Professional Association Recognition:

  • Greg Pratt co-authored several articles this year including “Denosumab in patients with cancer and skeletal metastases: A systematic review and meta-analysis” in Cancer Treatment Reviews
  • Clara Fowler co-authored “Follow-up of patients with resected thoracic malignancies” in Thoracic Surgery Clinics
  • Ron Hutchins co-authored “Concepts and definitions for “supportive care” “best supportive care” “palliative care” and “hospice care” in the published literature, dictionaries, and textbooks” in  Supportive Care in Cancer
  • Yimin Geng presented a poster at MLA 2012 in Seattle, WA, A clinical librarian’s involvement in the development and updates of institutional clinical practice Algorithms
  • April Aultman-Becker served as Texas Library Association’s Chair Distance E-Learning Round Table
  • April Aultman-Becker was accepted into the week long Association of College and Research Library’s Immersion Program Track
  • Sherry Widdoes received a $1,500 Professional Development Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine/South Central Region to attend the Charleston Conference on Issues in Book and Serials Acquisitions
  • Laurissa Gann won third place in the SCC/MLA South Central Chapter of the Medical Library Association’s  research poster competition for her poster More Than Numbers: Adding Dimension to Library Metrics
  • Javier Garza presented at the Oral History Association of America’s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. His paper, Demystifying MD Anderson: The Making Cancer History Voices Oral History Project was part of panel on oral histories in the sciences
New and Promoted Staff:

  • April Aultman-Becker joined the Library staff as the new education coordinator
  • Samantha Mueller joined the Library staff as a collections librarian
  • Deborah Delgado promoted to operations manger
  • Laurissa Gann promoted to senior librarian
  • Javier Garza promoted to senior librarian
  • Chris Oria promoted to library associate
