Databases Licensed by the Library

The Research Medical Library provides access to approximately 100 licensed databases through the Databases page of its Web site. About half of the databases deal with biomedical and health-related information. If you are not sure which databases to use, short descriptions of each database are included or you can call the Information Desk for help (713-792-2282).

If you would like to become better at searching for biomedical information, feel free to sign up for one of the Library's classes or view class manuals using the link that follows the description for each class. To gain access to the databases from home, see Remote Access to the Library's Resources below.

Document Delivery (ILLiad) Services

If you are an M. D. Anderson employee or student and need a resource that the Library does not have available online, you may place a request online for the item using the Library's document delivery system called ILLiad. (The ILL stands for inter-library loan.) We will scan from our print collection or obtain the item from another library. You can also use ILLiad to request book chapters and books. When placing an ILLiad request, you need to be using a workstation that is connected to the M. D. Anderson network.

To use ILLiad, you must be a registered user with the Research Medical Library and also register for an ILLiad account. To register for ILLiad, go to the Document Delivery page of the Library's Web site and use the Click Here link for First time users. Instructions for completing the ILLiad registration process are available.

The Research Medical Library subsidizes the costs for routine ILLiad requests, but does charge a $10.00 per item rush fee for requests that need to be filled within 24 hours. When submitting a rush request, please supply the Company/Cost Center number and the name of the individual granting Company/Cost Center privileges.

If you are unsure of your options when you need a copy of an article, particularly if you are in a hurry, this flowchart may help. Please call 713-745-4531 if you have any questions.

General Information about the Library

The Research Medical Library primarily serves M. D. Anderson's researchers, care providers, graduate students, and support staff. You can learn a great deal about the Library's hours, services, and resources by reviewing the General Information and Frequently Asked Questions handouts. If you need directions to the Library, please click here for directions or call the Information Desk (713-792-2282) for help.

Journals - Online & Print

The Research Medical Library licenses access to over 15,000 journals online and subscribes to approximately 550 journals in print. For recent years, about 90% of the print journals are also available online. The Online Journals page of the Library's Web site is the one best place to check to see what the Library has available both online and in print.

If you need help finding out if a journal is available, please feel free to call the Information Desk (713-792-2282). If you find yourself using the online journals frequently, you may wish to come to the Library's Finding Journals Online class, or review the main class handout online. To gain access to the online journals from home, see Remote Access to the Library's Resources below.

Library Catalog

The Research Medical Library shares an online catalog with major medical libraries in the Texas Medical Center and UTMB in Galveston. This makes it possible to search the collections of all of the libraries at one time or search the collection of any library individually. The Library provides a tips sheet for searching the catalog and the Information Desk (713-792-2282) can assist you or search the catalog for you.

Library Classes

Each month, the Library teaches a variety of classes for M. D. Anderson employees and students. The classes all focus on helping Library clients become better users of the Library's online resources. The Library's Web site lists the class schedule for the current month and coming month. More information, including registration information and class manuals are available from the Library Classes page.

The Library also provides help sessions for individuals, inservices, and special classes for small or large groups upon request. Sessions can be in the Library's computer classroom or at your location. Please contact Clara Fowler (cfowler@mdanderson.org, 713-745-1538) for more information.

If you are interested in learning more about specific desktop applications, such as Word, Excel, EndNote, Reference Manager, etc., check the Brown Bags/PC Training and Computer Training sections of the M. D. Anderson intranet.

Library Newsletter - NewsBytes

The Library's newsletter, NewsBytes, updates Library users on new online resources (journals, databases, books), provides tips for using these resources more effectively, and announces changes in Library services and policies.

Anyone can read the current month's and recent past issues of NewsBytes on the Library's Web site. To receive the email version, which is sent out on the first day of each month, send an email to cfowler@mdanderson.org

Online Books

The Research Medical Library licenses access to approximately 100 online books that can be accessed using the Online Books link on the side bar of many Library Web pages. Included in this list is netLibrary, which provides access to 43,000+ electronic books, all of which can be searched at one time. As with the online journals and databases, remote access to the online books is available for M. D. Anderson employees and students.

Other Texas Medical Center Libraries

The Research Medical Library is a member of the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium (THSLC) that includes the major University of Texas component libraries in the Medical Center and UTMB in Galveston. Registering for library privileges with one library provides borrowing privileges at all members of the consortium. The libraries share an online catalog of their collections, and users can search the collections of all of the libraries at one time.

Each library maintains its own Web site and sets its own policies, hours, checkout periods, etc. The THSLC brochure provides some basic information about each library. View the Texas Medical Center Libraries map to see their locations on campus.

Printing & Photocopy Service Accounts

Like most libraries, the Research Medical Library charges a nominal fee for printing and photocopying to help cover the cost of supplies and service contracts on equipment. To read about the three types of accounts or print out a registration form, go to Printing & Photocopy Service Accounts. If you have questions, please stop by the Library or call the Information Desk (713-792-2282).

Registering for Library Privileges

Registering for privileges with the Research Medical Library enables you to check out books from this library and other libraries in the Texas Medical Center (see Other Texas Medical Center Libraries below). Registration is also required before using other Research Medical Library services, such as starting a printing/photocopying account or requesting a copy of an article through document delivery (ILLiad).

To register for library privileges, come to the Research Medical Library's Information Desk with your M. D. Anderson badge. If you would prefer to fax in your registration form and a photocopy of your ID badge (front and back), please call the Information Desk (713-792-2282) for assistance.

Remote Access to Library Resources

All M. D. Anderson employees can apply for remote access to the Library's resources (online journals, books, and databases) by first calling 4-INFO (713-794-4636). 4-INFO will provide a form that must be endorsed by your supervisor or department head and returned to 4-INFO before you will receive a user name and password.

If you are using a high speed Internet connection (DSL or cable modem), you will also need to install a small application called a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client on your home computer or notebook. 4-INFO provides the software and instructions.

M. D. Anderson-affiliated students (School of Health Sciences, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences) who did not register for remote access services with the Research Medical Library during their initial orientation will need to come to the Information Desk with their student identification badge to register.

Registered users of the Research Medical Library also qualify for remote access to the online resources of the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC or Jones) Library. To learn more about these accounts and access the registration form, go to the bottom of the Online Journals page of the Library's Web site and use the Click Here link for Online journal collection at the HAM-TMC Library. You should receive your user name and password from the HAM-TMC Library within a few working days.
