What is Faculty & Staff Remote Access?

The Faculty & Staff "Secure WebAccess System" provides remote, off campus, access to the Library's licensed research oriented resources such as databases and online journals. This resource is available to faculty and staff affiliated with the University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Remote access is provided by a "SSL VPN" system which uses an RSA SecurID token to connect to M. D. Anderson's network over a high-speed internet connection.

How do I get an account?

Accounts must be requested through the ISARP Web site. When making the request, on the "Available Resources" list, select SSL VPN (Remote Access). If you need assistance please contact 4-INFO (713-794-4636). 4-INFO will provide you with information to request a VPN remote access account.

Signing into the system:

  • Begin from the Research Medical Library home page at http://www3.mdanderson.org/library
  • Click on "M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Faculty & Staff" under "Remote Access Options" near the bottom of the page. (See illustration below).

  • Enter your MyID username (this is usually the same as the one you use to login to your computer at work) and passcode (PIN + tokencode which is the 6 digits currently showing on your RSA SecurID token) and click the SIGN IN button. (See illustration below).

  • The first time you login, you will receive numerous prompts to install software and components, this is normal. Accept these prompts and proceed.
  • Once you login, you will see a screen that briefly displays a message stating "Remote Access Login Successful". (See illustration below).

  • You will now be be redirected back to the Library's home page. You should also see the following icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen:

  • You will now have access to all of the Library's online resources.

Signing out of the system:

  • To disconnect from the SSL VPN, right click on the "Network Connect" icon in the "system tray" to display the menu at right:

  • Select "Sign Out" from the popup menu.

Known Issue:

If you are disconnected shortly after connecting to the SSL VPN and receive the following message:

"System Log Message: The Network Connect session terminated. Do you want to reconnect? (nc.windows.app.23711)"

Check to see if you have "Bonjour for Windows" installed. It will be located in the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Bonjour

Older versions of this software conflict with the SSL VPN. The latest version corrects this problem and can be downloaded and installed for free from the following location:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/bonjourforwindows.html
