Lora Frances Davis was born in Quincy, Florida, on October 26, 1915. She received her Bachelor degree from Duke University and received additional degrees from Emory University and the University of California at Los Angeles, among others.
Ms. Davis served as librarian at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute Medical Library (now known as the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Medical Library) from 1957 to 1959. Prior to her tenure at the MD Anderson Research Medical Library (RML), she served as librarian at Tokyo U. S. Army Hospital. After leaving the RML, Ms. Davis served as Chief Medical Librarian at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. She later served as the U.S. Army Public Health Command Consultant there. Ms. Davis retired in 1980 and lived in San Antonio, Texas. Ms. Davis died on January 26, 2008, in San Antonio, Texas.
The interview of Lora Frances Davis provides an account of the development of MD Anderson RML during the late 1950’s. She describes her experience working with Dr. R. Lee Clark, including being recruited by him to direct the RML. Ms. Davis discusses the wide variety of services performed by RML staff, which ranged from collection development and maintenance to medical reference searches. The interview also includes her comments about several MD Anderson staff members (physicians, scientists, etc.) with whom she interacted while at the RML.
