As M. D. Anderson’s programs and operations continue to evolve and grow at significant rates, faculty and staff are projected to increase proportionately. The new T. Boone Pickens Academic Tower will help alleviate some of the office space needs for our expanding workforce and also provide conference/meeting room facilities, dining facilities, a fitness center, and a new home for the Research Medical Library.
On November 11, 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony kicked off construction of the new building. After years of planning, design, and construction, the building is nearing completion and occupants are scheduled to move in beginning late spring/early summer 2008.
The 21-story tower sits on 1.35 acres adjacent to M. D. Anderson’s Faculty Center and consists of 730,000 square feet of space. It is the tallest structure at M. D. Anderson, with the Research Medical Library occupying the entire 21st floor (20,105 gross square feet).
The new Research Medical Library promises to be a landmark facility that emphasizes the library as an active partner and leader in research, teaching, and learning activities at M. D. Anderson. Client and staff space is designed to take advantage of huge expanses of windows and ceiling heights ranging from 10 to 22 feet.
Collaborative workspaces, as well as quiet individual study areas, comfortable soft seating, and public computer workstations are strategically interspersed throughout the floor. A state-of-the-art collaborative learning classroom and a conference room, equipped for video-conferencing are also included. The new library space promises to encourage the use of resources and services by providing areas that are conducive to research, consultation, collaborative learning, reflection, computing, and quiet study.
