Using subject headings in PubMed is one of the best ways to focus your search for journal articles. In November, the National Library of Medicine released the new Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for 2009. They will add 446 new Descriptors to be used in the MEDLINE/PubMed database.
Some MeSH are entirely new terms, others update existing term or provide more specificity. A sample of the relevant MeSH for M.D. Anderson research include:
Early Detection of Cancer
Methods to identify and characterize cancer in the early stages of disease and predict tumor behavior.
Evidence-Based Practice
A way of providing health care that is guided by a thoughtful integration of the best available scientific knowledge with clinical expertise. This approach allows the practitioner to critically assess research data, clinical guidelines, and other information resources in order to correctly identify the clinical problem, apply the most high-quality intervention, and re-evaluate the outcome for future improvement.
Multiple Pulmonary Nodules
A number of small lung lesions characterized by small round masses of 2- to 3-mm in diameter. They are usually detected by chest CT scans ( COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY, X-RAY). Such nodules can be associated with metastases of malignancies inside or outside the lung, benign granulomas, or other lesions.
Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Neoplasms
A family of mesenchymal tumors composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. These cells do not have a normal anatomic homolog. Previously indexed under Epithelioid Cells/pathology (1999-2008)
Small Cell Lung Carcinoma
A form of highly malignant lung cancer that is composed of small ovoid cells. Previously indexed under Carcinoma, Small Cell (1975-2008)
