New MeSH for 2009

Using subject headings in PubMed is one of the best ways to focus your search for journal articles.  In November, the National Library of Medicine released the new Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for 2009.  They will add 446 new Descriptors to be used in the MEDLINE/PubMed database.

Some MeSH are entirely new terms, others update existing term or provide more specificity.  A sample of the relevant MeSH for M.D. Anderson research include:

Early Detection of Cancer
Methods to identify and characterize cancer in the early stages of disease and predict tumor behavior.

Evidence-Based Practice
A way of providing health care that is guided by a thoughtful integration of the best available scientific knowledge with clinical expertise. This approach allows the practitioner to critically assess research data, clinical guidelines, and other information resources in order to correctly identify the clinical problem, apply the most high-quality intervention, and re-evaluate the outcome for future improvement.

Multiple Pulmonary Nodules
A number of small lung lesions characterized by small round masses of 2- to 3-mm in diameter. They are usually detected by chest CT scans ( COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY, X-RAY). Such nodules can be associated with metastases of malignancies inside or outside the lung, benign granulomas, or other lesions.

Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Neoplasms
A family of mesenchymal tumors composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. These cells do not have a normal anatomic homolog.  Previously indexed under Epithelioid Cells/pathology (1999-2008)

Small Cell Lung Carcinoma
A form of highly malignant lung cancer that is composed of small ovoid cells.  Previously indexed under Carcinoma, Small Cell (1975-2008)

Free Print Subscription to Cell

Would you like to receive a free print subscription to Cell? As a benefit of the Research Medical Library’s license to Cell online, Cell Press is offering M. D. Anderson faculty, students and staff the opportunity to subscribe to Cell in print at no charge. Print subscriptions generally cost $194 annually.
Even though you already have access to Cell online, easy access to print copies provides advantages such as:

  • Convenience — the print copy can be mailed to your home or office
  • Image quality — figures and tables in the print version usually are better in quality than those available online or from printed PDF files
  • Browsing — many journal readers prefer browsing print rather than online versions of journals
  • Content — certain conference announcements and advertisements are not available online.

To order a free subscription, visit the Cell Press Web site and complete the brief order form. The subscription will include 26 biweekly issues and the first issue should arrive 4-6 weeks after completing the order form.
Also available from Cell are the CellPaperClips, podcasts highlighting one or two articles per issue.  These conversations between the Cell editor and author explore the rationale and implications of their findings. Listen to one and uncover interesting questions and perspectives that aren’t captured in print.  Podcasts are accessible directly from the Cell website or you can subscribe to them through iTunes.
