New Full Text Linking Options in PubMed

Many who search Research Medical Library databases such as the Web of Science, Scopus, and Ovid Medline are familiar with clicking the Find It! button when they wish to see their options for viewing articles online or obtaining copies through ILLiad, the Library’s document delivery service. The Library is pleased to announce that beginning February 1, a Find It!@MDACC button will be available in PubMed search results with the same function as the Find It! button in other databases.

For those already familiar with using the Find It! button in Library databases, follow the steps below to begin using the Find It!@MDACC button in PubMed:

  1. Connect to PubMed using the link on the Library’s Databases page or the PubMed link in the Quick Links drop down menu available on many pages throughout the Library’s website.
  2. Search PubMed as usual and display records in the Abstract or AbstractPlus format.
  3. If a desired article is available through PubMed’s LinkOut feature, the M. D. Anderson logo will display. Clicking the M. D. Anderson logo will remain the shortest route to the full text article online.
  4. All PubMed records will now display the new Find It!@MDACC button. When the M. D. Anderson logo is absent, click the Find It!@MDACC button to view the range of full text options for that article, including ordering it through ILLiad.

Searchers who have bookmarked a link to PubMed in their Web browsers will need to change their bookmark to the following URL to take advantage of this new feature: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?myncbishare=mdacclib&holding=
mdacclib_fft&dr=abstract

If your are unfamiliar with how the Find It! and Find It!@MDACC buttons work, clicking either of these (when available) for an item in your database search results launches an article linking application that checks the availability of articles throughout the Library’s online journal subscriptions and full text databases. The page displaying the results of the article linking application’s check will contain one or more of the following options:

  • A link to the article in one of the Library’s online journal subscriptions or databases.
  • If the Library subscribes to the journal online but the linking application cannot link you directly to the article, it will provide a link to the online journal so you can find the article yourself.
  • If the Library subscribes to the journal in print, the linking application will provide you with the years available in print and display Research Medical Library’s Print Holdings in the Resource column of the results.
  • A Search other local medical libraries link that looks for the journal in the holdings of the libraries of the Texas Health Science Libraries Consortium. (See details below.)
  • A link to place an ILLiad document delivery request for the article. (See details below.)

If the article is not available online from either the Research Medical Library or the HAM-TMC (Jones) Library, click the ILLiad link and login to ILLiad. Once logged in, you will be taken directly to the form for placing a photocopy request, and the article information will be transferred into the form automatically. Edit the information or add any comments you wish, then click the Submit button. The Library will receive your ILLiad request and complete it as usual.
