Henry Stewart Talks

The Research Medical Library has purchased a unique collection of biomedical seminar style talks.  Henry Stewart Talks includes over 800 online presentations by experts in their fields presenting in their own styles with animated slides and accompanying narration.  The presentations cover both the fundamentals as well as the latest advances.  This resource should be of particular interest to students and residents at M.D. Anderson as well as faculty and researchers who need a refresher in fields outside their areas of expertise.

To access Henry Stewart Talks, go to http://www.hstalks.com/access, or look under the list of Biomedical Databases from the Research Medical Library at http://www3.mdanderson.org/library/databases/databases.html

Talks are organized into series content areas or are searchable.  Searching by “oncology” pulls up a number of interesting talks including:

  • Imatinib as a Paradigm of Targeted Cancer Therapies

Prof. Brian Druker, Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute, USA
Series: Signal Transduction via Protein Tyrosine Kinase Receptors: Structures, Function, Regulation, Mechanisms and Role in Disease
Topics covered: Clinical description of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) | Molecular pathogenesis of CML | The BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase as a therapeutic target | Preclinical and clinical development of the ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor, imatinib | Mechanisms of resistance to imatinib | Development of novel ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors for imatinib-resistant CML | Imatinib and gastrointestinal stromal tumor | Extending the imatinib paradigm | Lessons learned from the clinical trials of imatinib

  • Exploring and Predicting Phenotype and Function in Cancer Biology: Working in High Dimension Data Spaces

Prof. Robert Clarke, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University, USA
Series: Using Bioinformatics in the Exploration of Genetic Diversity: Fundamentals and Recent Advances
Topics covered: Genes and phenotypes | Gene expression microarrays | Data properties | Structure of microarray data | Curse of dimensionality | Concentration of measure | Blessing of smoothness | Multimodality | Data analysis | Reducing dimensionality | Clustering and gene selection | Validation

  • Biomarkers and Surrogate Endpoints in Randomized Clinical Trials

Prof. Marc Buyse, IDDI (International Drug Development Institute) & University of Hasselt, Belgium
Series: Design and Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials: Design, Analysis & Theory
Topics covered: Definitions of biomarker, clinical endpoint, prognostic biomarker, predictive biomarker, and surrogate endpoint | Validation of prognostic, predictive and surrogate biomarker | Response as a surrogate endpoint for survival in advanced colorectal cancer | Progression-free survival as a surrogate endpoint for survival in advanced colorectal cancer | The surrogate threshold effect | Disease free survival as a surrogate endpoint for survival in resectable colorectal cancer | PSA as a surrogate endpoint for survival in advanced prostate cancer

  • The Challenge of Targeting Toxins to Tumors

Prof. Ben Seon, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, USA
Series: Monoclonal Antibodies as Therapeutic Agents: Fundamentals, Therapeutic Applications and Latest Advances
Topics covered: Generation of immunotoxins | Mode of action of different immunotoxins | Strategies to overcome the major impediments in the therapeutic application of immunotoxins to cancer patients | Anti-endoglin monoclonal antibodies and immunotoxins | Anti-angiogenic therapy of tumors | Vascular targeting therapy of tumors | Comparison between immunotoxins and naked antibodies in therapeutic application

Talks are organized into series to create a course-approach to a topic.  Each series is accessible through the resource or may be printed out in PDF format to share with your group.  A few of the series are:

  • The Design and Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

  • Epigenetics: Concepts, Theories, Paradigms and Mechanisms

Since this is new type of online resource for the Research Medical Library to purchase, we would appreciate your feedback.  Henry Stewart Talks can be easily integrated into any e-learning environment.  To provide feedback or ask questions, please contact Clara Fowler at cfowler@mdanderson.org or 713-745-1538.

Historical Resources Center Opens Reading Room

Interested in tracing your department’s history? Need to find out when the first research fellowship was established? With the recent move of the Research Medical Library to the 21st floor of Pickens Academic Tower, the Historical Resources Center (HRC) now features a Reading Room specifically designed for researchers interested in M. D. Anderson’s archives and special collections.

The HRC was established to collect, preserve, and make available for research the records and other historical materials that document the growth and development of M. D. Anderson, cancer medicine, and science.  Holdings include the History of Cancer Collection of rare books, journals, and monographs, as well as official institutional records and personal papers of faculty and staff; oral history interviews; historical photographs and audiovisual material.  The new library also features space for HRC historical exhibits, as well as an enlarged “stacks” and processing workroom.  HRC manager and archivist Lesley W. Brunet and archivist Javier Garza are available to assist faculty and staff, as well as historians and other clients, with historical research.  The Reading Room is not staffed full-time, and therefore researchers are encouraged to contact HRC staff prior to their visit.

To conduct research in historical collections, transfer institutional records, or donate personal papers and other historical material, please contact Lesley W. Brunet (lwbrunet@mdanderson.org or 713-792-8220) or Javier Garza (jjgarza@mdanderson.org, 713-792-2285).  More information on the Historical Resources Center can be found at http://www3.mdanderson.org/library/hrc/collections.html.
