Children's Card Project gets a new name

M. D. Anderson's popular Children's Christmas Card Project is beginning its 22nd season this fall with a new lineup of cards as well as a new name.

Because of the increasingly year-round nature of the program--and the wider variety of products now offered--the project is now called the Children's Art Project. Laura Bush, wife of Texas Gov. George Bush, helped introduce the new name at a July ceremony attended by the 1995 holiday card designers.

This year's holiday card collection features 26 designs, including a snowman encased in a tree ornament, dolphins pulling Santa's sleigh across the ocean, three children eagerly awaiting Santa's arrival and a nativity scene. The winning designs were chosen from more than 160 entries.

Two of the cards were designed by children undergoing treatment at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center-Orlando. Among the winning designers this year are five-time design winners Dwayne Fletcher and Monte Howell and eight-time design winner Julian Zagars.

In addition to cards, merchandise available featuring the holiday designs includes gift bags, tote bags, ornaments and T-shirts.

Since its inception in 1974, the card project has given more than $7.6 million to programs benefiting pediatric patients and their families. Last year's card sales resulted in the allocation of more than $800,000 to a wide variety of programs, including 41 college scholarships, summer camp, child life workers, an amputee ski trip and a program to help teachers and students welcome pediatric cancer patients back to the classroom.
