Faculty, staff and volunteers celebrated the completion of the $151 million Fulfill The Promise capital campaign two and a half years ahead of schedule, and the new Clinic Services Facility opened its doors in April. Funded entirely through philanthropi c gifts from Fulfill The Promise, the CSF is the first of three new buildings designed to replace antiquated facilities. Construction of the new Clinical Research Building and the Albert B. and Margaret M. Alkek Hospital was well under way by year's end.
Beyond the scope of the capital campaign, $14.2 million was raised for vital research programs dedicated to solving the cancer problem. That figure includes monies donated during the first eight months of calendar year 1996 for new Institutional Funding Initiatives in cancer research outlined by staff in collaboration with The University Cancer Foundation Board of Visitors.
In eight months' time, 33 percent of a $23.5 million total funding goal had been met for priority research initiatives involving cancers of the breast, brain, skin, prostate and ovary, as well as priority programs in cancer prevention and in carcinogenes is research at the Science Park Research Division at Smithville, Texas.

Letter from Patrick B. Mulvey
Associate Vice President for Development
Fiscal 1995-96 marked the closing of the Fulfill The Promise campaign, which finished ahead of schedule and exceeded our goal. A total of $151.6 million was raised for facilities' construction and program endowments. More than 3,000 individuals, corporations and foundations contributed to this capital campaign.
Private fund-raising efforts for the balance of the fiscal year resulted in additional outstanding results, as M. D. Anderson Cancer Center realized in excess of $22.3 million in cash, pledged trusts, estate gifts and gifts-in-kind. Nearly all of the 64 ,202 contributions are supporting initiatives exclusive of funding objectives for Fulfill The Promise.
Each and every donation, no matter the amount, is making a difference in moving us closer to our goal of eliminating cancer. Contributions to either the capital or the annual campaign have helped ensure that the faculty and staff can enhance and expand the institution's exceptional programs in patient care, research, education and prevention.
The most important beneficiaries of your generous gifts are the thousands of patients who have come to M. D. Anderson over the years to receive the highest quality research-driven cancer care available. A few of these patients and donors whose loved one s faced cancer share their experiences throughout this annual report.
On behalf of all the faculty, staff, volunteers and patients, we express our sincere appreciation for your thoughtful philanthropy. We promise to continue using your gifts wisely and look forward to working with you in the years ahead. You truly make a difference in M. D. Anderson maintaining its unparalleled standard of excellence.
