M. D. Anderson Establishes Affiliation in Madrid

M. D. Anderson is one step closer to forging an international affiliation in Spain.

The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved an agreement that will allow M. D. Anderson to provide services necessary for the establishment of an M. D. Anderson cancer care program in Madrid.

In March, the Deputy Minister of Defense of Spain, Excmo. Dr. D. Adolfo Menendez y Menendez, and Cristina de Manuel, chair of MDA Holding Spain, S. A., signed the cooperation agreement, permitting the development of the new facility.

When the center opens, Spanish patients will be able to stay closer to home yet still be treated according to M. D. Anderson's pathways and guidelines, which are detailed regimens of care for all types and stages of cancer. They will have access to many clinical trials offered at M. D. Anderson as well as the opportunity to come to the Houston cancer center for specialized treatments and protocols as needed.

Physicians at M. D. Anderson International-Espana will conduct weekly clinical consultations with their colleagues in Houston via satellite linkup and also can receive continuing medical education.

"We are extremely pleased to share our expertise and offer the M. D. Anderson standard of care to cancer patients in Spain," says Dr. John Mendelsohn, president of M. D. Anderson.

"In a world that is shrinking in terms of communication and commerce, cancer is a global disease that demands our every resource," he adds. "This partnership demonstrates our commitment to our mission to eradicate cancer throughout the world, as well as in Texas and the United States."
