The scholarships and fellowships, and some of the other travel and research awards listed below, are administered by GSBS. American Legion Auxiliary Fellowships July 7, 2006 $5,000 Pre-doctoral students working on cancer-related projects. US Citizen.

6-10 fellowships funded, which are competitively renewable up to 3 years.

G&D Awardees: Joanna Koch (Lozano), Jon Lyons (McCrea), Katie Roeder (Schumacher), John Latham (Dent), Joe Taube (Barton)

T.C. Hsu Memorial Endowed Scholarship TBA (August in 2005) $4,000  

Must be a GSBS student in good academic standing. Recognizes a GSBS graduate student whose graduate studies and research are in the area of genetics or cell biology.

This scholarship was established in 2004 by family and friends of Dr. T.C. Hsu, who was a renowned scientist and leader in cytogenetics, as well as a long time member of the GSBS faculty.

Sam Taub and Beatrice Burton Endowed Scholarship in Vision Disease TBA (August in 2005) $2000   Basic research tied to vision disease is eligible. Award is not restricted to clinical aspects; molecular and genetic projects are fine.

Schissler Foundation Fellowships TBA (Sept. in 2005) Full stipend and benefits

For Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. GSBS students recently advanced to candidacy, or within one semester of advancing, and in the broad field of the genetics of human diseases.

Awarded for one year to two predoctoral students. Can be supplemented by advisor up to 130% of GSBS GRA'ship.

Cameron Foundation Fellowship TBA (Sept. in 2005) $20,000

Ph.D. student recently advanced to candidacy, or within a semester of advancing to candidacy. Research must be related to cardiovascular or Alzheimer's disease. $10,000 from Cameron, matched by $10,000 from GSBS. Can be supplemented by advisor up to 130% of GSBS GRA'ship. Awarded annually.
President's Research Scholarship TBA (Oct. in 2005) $5,000   Advanced to candidacy. Good academic standing in GSBS. Achieved distinction in biomedical research.

One year scholarships. The Presidents of UTHSC-Houston and MDACC provide funding for this award to recognize outstanding GSBS students.

Sowell-Huggins Scholarship TBA (Nov. in 2005) $2,000   Must have advanced to candidacy. Research must be related to cancer.

Award is for one year.

G&D Awardee: Yasmine Valentin-Vega (Lozano)

Sowell-Huggins Professorship and Graduate Fellowship in Cancer Research TBA (Nov. in 2005) Full stipend for up to 3 years for fellow   Joint application must be filed by the student and advisor. Research must be related to cancer research.

Full stipend renewable for up to 3 years. Award jointly held by student and supervisory professor. Award is based on the academic performance of the student, the quality of his/her research proposal, and his/her potential for future contributions in the area of cancer research; and the overall contributions of the student's supervisory professor to the area of cancer research and to graduate education at the GSBS. Faculty advisor must hold a regular appointment in GSBS and must have directed at least 2 GSBS students to the Ph.D. degree.

G&D Awardees: Yvonne Evrard and Dr. Sharon Dent

R.W. Butcher Achievement Award TBA (Nov. in 2005) $2,000 Advanced GSBS student in any degree program who has achieved excellence in research and contributed contributions to GSBS and society as a whole.

Awarded annually. Must have at least reached the point of having a project defined.

G&D Awardee: Amber Johnson (Barton)

Roberta M. and
Jean M. Worsham Endowed Scholarship

(matched by $500 from GSBS)
Student in the fields of the behavioral or neurosciences, primarily addiction or obsessive/compulsive behavior. Award is formally presented during Brain Awareness Week in March.
Rosalie B. Hite Fellowships TBA

(at time of application)
  GSBS students whose research project is in the area of cancer research.

Fellowships include a stipend, tuition and fees, single travel allowance to a national meeting, and are eligible for competitive renewal for up to three years. Selection of Fellows by the Hite Fellowship Committee is on the basis of academic excellence and applicability of the proposed research program to problems of cancer research. Genes & Development Student

This award will cover all expenses for one G&D student to travel to Kobe, Japan to visit the Riken Center for Developmental Biology and to attend their 2005 Symposium "Origin and Development of Vertebrate Traits," April 11-13, 2005 in Kobe.
