| Welcome from the Director Dear Prospective Graduate Student, The Genes & Development Graduate Program offers a unique opportunity for Ph.D. students to study exciting fundamental questions in biology within the environment of the #1 ranked cancer center* in the United States – The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Our program currently has over 35 faculty members and 50 students with research covering a broad spectrum of modern biomedical interests including developmental and cell biology, cancer biology, signal transduction, transcription and structural biology. A number of students from our program have gone on to obtain faculty positions at top universities and others have achieved successful careers in biotechnology, bioinformatics, patent law, and intellectual property development. Our program is housed in the Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center where we foster a highly collegial and interactive environment through offerings of classes, seminars and other activities. Each spring all members of the program participate in a stimulating science retreat at an enjoyable resort outside of Houston, where faculty and students give seminars and present posters summarizing their recent research. Throughout the year, students are given opportunities to present their work in journal clubs, seminars and committee meetings where they develop valuable communication skills and gather ideas. The program also sponsors the outstanding weekly Blaffer Lecture Series in which prominent scientists from all over the world come to speak about their latest research. Each week the program hosts a student luncheon with one of these speakers, providing a chance for our students to meet with these great scientists. The program also sponsors events designed to improve our students’ communication skills and to assist them in finding suitable career paths. Students enter our program by first applying for admission to the University of Texas-Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (UT GSBS), which provides a wide range of additional research possibilities. If you are interested in a career in biomedical research, I hope you will consider our Program in Genes & Development. If you have any questions regarding the research training opportunities that we offer or on how to become a member of our program, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of our outstanding faculty by email or phone. Application forms for admission to UT GSBS are available at: http://gsbs.uth.tmc.edu/. Sincerely, Gregory S. May, Ph.D. Last updated:
