Break-Out Sessions

Note: All breakout sessions will be held in the small conference rooms next to the meeting hall.

SESSION #1
Friday, May 9
5:00 pm to 6:15 pm

#1 PubMed: Beyond the Basics
Clara Fowler, Sr. Librarian
M. D. Anderson Research Medical Library
Learn to search PubMed with greater precision by using MeSH terms and limits. Find articles published in selected journals and always locate the full text of the articles. Save searches and have PubMed alert you when new articles are available.
Location: Room ASC2

#2 Your Career on Steroids: Obtaining an Academic Faculty Position
Dr. Gigi Lozano, Chair and Professor
Department of Cancer Genetics
This will be an interactive discussion of what it takes to have a successful career as a scientist with a focus on obtaining an academic faculty position. I will provide some advice and answer lots of questions.
Location: Room ASC3

#3 Obtaining an Academic Postdoctoral Position
Dr. Richard Behringer, Professor,
Department of Molecular Genetics
Postdoctoral training is a requirement for many career paths. This interactive session will discuss what students can do to ensure that they will be competitive for postdoctoral positions in the top academic, government, and industry labs.
Location: Room ASC5

SESSION #2
Saturday, May 10
3:15 pm to 4:30 pm

#1 Getting Started with EndNote References
Clara Fowler, Sr. Librarian
M. D. Anderson Research Medical Library
EndNote is a citation management program that enables you to generate bibliographies in over 3000 different styles. This session will teach you how to import citations from PubMed and other databases into EndNote, change citation styles, and cite references in-text and generate bibliographies using Word. This session will cover the Windows version of EndNote X.
Location: Room ASC2

#2 In Vivo RNAi
Dr. Miles Wilkinson, Professor
Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
RNA interference (RNAi) is a widely used technique to decrease the expression of a given target gene. Here, we will go over some RNAi approaches to knockdown gene expression in a cell type- and tissue-specific manner in mice in vivo. Regulated RNAi (transient depletion of the target gene in vivo) can also be achieved by these methods.
Location: Room ASC3
