Patient Stories

Our son, Jason Weaver, was admitted to M. D. Anderson on December 4th, 2007 with APL leukemia. His condition was very critical with brain hemorrhaging, kidney shut down, and pneumonia ravaging his body. For 4 weeks, Jason was treated in an induced, deeply sedated state in the Critical Care Unit.

On January 3rd of this year, the leukemia medical team brought him out of this state & moved him to one of the oncology floors to continue his treatment. February 8th, he returned to his home in Austin. A maintenance program continues with ATRA and Arsenic treatments at an oncology center in Austin. He started back to work on March 1st and has resumed (with a vengeance!) a fairly normal life style.

It is truly some kind of miracle that brought our son back from the "brink" of disaster in such a very short time. It is very difficult as parents watching and being part of this whole scenario for 2 1/2 months to be able to express our deep gratitude and love for all of the "miracle workers" involved with Jason during his stay @ M. D. Anderson. Blurred visions and faces come and go through our minds, some stand out more than others....regardless, they were all there to do their job and keep this man alive and get him well. Tenderness, compassion, concern...it was all there from the get-go, no matter who was attending him.

Through Dr. Koller, who directed so much of Jason's recovery and continues to do so today, we extend our utmost thanks to all of the Leukemia department staff that were involved with his return to us and his family.
