020 - Growing Resilience
At first glance, this may appear to be a simple pot made of pennies, but as a sculpture, it holds deeper meaning. The approximately 1,500 patinated coins were gathered from MD Anderson’s fountains and, due to wear, would no longer be accepted by banks (we tried). Rejected for corrosion, they’ve found a new purpose here. Each penny once carried a wish: for healing, for strength, for time. Some journeys led to recovery, and others did not. The sculpture’s weight reflects both heartbreak and joy. The Aglaonema ‘Siam Aurora Lipstick’ growing within once lived in The Park, a beloved place now gone. Yet it grows — a quiet reminder that life continues in new beginnings. Made entirely from leftover materials (soil, recycled plastic pot, glue, pennies, and a rescued plant), this piece is a testimony that beauty can come from struggle, and resilience can take root in the most unexpected places. Art is about 6 inches by 6 inches and 12 inches tall.

022 - Woven Basket
We used basket basket-weaving process to make this basket. Our team can see that the surgical instrument sterilization wraps provide high level of protection against fluids and micro-organisms. We collected the wraps after they were used during the time we preparing the surgical instruments for surgery. These wraps are usually going to be thrown away in the regular trash bag during the case, but we can see the potential of recycling the high-quality material. These baskets can be used as a grocery bag, a craft, or an organizing item.
Art is about 10 inches by 12 inches in size.

032 - Foundations & Corporations
The idea of "Our Royal Zoo" can be a powerful metaphor for the moral imperative to protect Earth's ecosystems and their inhabitants. It underscores the interconnectedness of all living things and the need for responsible stewardship. This project was made from old Amazon boxes that I used to draw and make the cardboard animal cut outs. Each "royal" on this life-raft is uniquely adorned with leftover fabric from small bags that my tea leaves came in or the end roles of special occasion wrapping paper or gift bags that could not be used. The raft is made from recycled coke zero cans and old National Geographic covers since it is one of the only publications widely subscribed to that covers matters related to our ecosystem and broadens awareness. The flowers by which the raft is "buoyed" are made from crumbled tissue paper. The jewels that adorn both the elephant and sealion are from old, recycled metal earrings that had broken and a unique ribbon that came with a gift of spices I'd received from a loved one who visited India. The art is about 16 inches by 8 inches in size.

033 - Healing in the Elements
This artwork, crafted from Apheresis Clinic's supply caps and tubings meant for discard, and mostly of unused/expired specimen lab tubes generously provided by the MDA Laboratory Department, transforms the remnants of diagnosis into a vision of recovery. Each cap, tube, and stopper once carried the story of someone doing Stem Cell Therapy or awaiting answers a symbol of illness, uncertainty, and the fragile search for healing. Now, reimagined as a vivid landscape, they tell a new story: one of resilience, hope, renewal, and the interconnectedness of science, nature, and the human spirit. This recycled art piece is a tribute by the Apheresis Clinic and team to every patient, every healer, and the enduring beauty that can rise from our most vulnerable moments. The art is about 2 feet Tall by 3 feet wide.

035 - Time
"Time" is a clock built from recycled computer parts - once tools of technology, now part of a story about progress and possibility. Inspired by the way innovation continues to shape medicine, this piece reflects how time and technology converge in our mission to end cancer.
Every minute moves us forward. Every second holds opportunity - not just for breakthroughs in medicine, but in how we choose to live, connect, and show up for one another. "Time" reminds us that change is always in motion - and that we are all part of the progress. Part of the mission. The art is about 12 inches by 12 inches.

040 - Rock'n Research
This is a Fender-style guitar with all reclaimed/ recycled wood and parts. The top, neck, fingerboard board and head are composed of wood I harvested from oak trees removed to support the construction of the new South Campus Research Building 5 (SCRB5). The building is currently under construction at the corner of Old Spanish Trail and Bertner Ave, thank you Vaughn Construction for helping me claim the wood. The back of the guitar is poplar wood from a discarded piano I found on the side of the road.
HUGE thank you goes out to South Paw Guitars (https://southpawguitars.com/) and Rockin’ Robin Guitars and Music (https://www.rockinrobinguitars.com/), and guitar luthier Clarence for their amazing support in providing all the hardware for this build. All parts are recycled from other guitars and are functional.
Though this should not be considered a new guitar, it is very much playable, and if someone likes to play, they will enjoy this piece. It is also an awesome display piece to connect one to the amazing mission here at MD Anderson – Making Cancer History! Art is standard guitar size.
