When the new Care Centers opened in the Spring of 1996, M. D. Anderson enhanced its outpatient services by combining its previously separate, specialty-based clinics into multidisciplinary care centers. These Care Centers focus on a particular group of cancers or a particular disease site. In a single location, a pathologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist, for example, collaborate to determine the best possible treatment plan for an individual patient. Where possible, diagnostic services are also located in the Centers so that patients receive much of their ambulatory care via "one-stop shopping."
