Welcome to the fall issue of the Generation
to Generation Newsletter. In this issue we are focusing on
issues related to genetic testing. Current genetic testing
technology is allowing us to detect genetic changes that may
cause a predisposition to developing cancer, polyps, or other
health problems. This new technology can help identify individuals
who are at increased risk, so that screening can be initiated
at a younger age and serious complications may be avoided.
Increased knowledge of cancer genetics may also help lead
to the development of new drugs and other methods for preventing
cancer. However, there are many ethical, emotional, scientific,
and legal issues raised by genetic testing that need to be
addressed in the process of making decisions about its use.
In these few pages we will begin to address these issues,
and we will continue to explore the implications of genetic
testing further in our upcoming issues. We are looking forward
to hearing about your thoughts on and experiences with these
issues. Please send or e-mail your comments to the address
listed in the "Contact Us" section of our webpage.
