DISTANT METASTASIS - The Trigeminal Nerve

Case 8 - Melanoma of right neck with metastasis to mandibular division and gasserion ganglion

This 41-year-old female had widespread melanoma with involvement of the lymph nodes in the neck. She was treated conservatively with chemotherapy.

Transverse ultrasound of the right neck: a large hypoechoic lesion in the right neck consistent with lymphadenopathy. Ultrasound guided needle biopsy was performed and revealed metastatic malignant melanoma. Coronal post-contrast T1-weighted MR image (TR 700/TE 20) at the level of the middle sphenoid sinus: contrast-enhancing lesion in the left cavernous sinus predominated in the region of V3 (arrows).

Axial post contrast T2-weighted MR image (TR 2200/TE 80) at the level of the mid-orbit: enlargement of gasserian ganglion and the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve with contrast enhancement.(arrows).
