NORMAL DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING OF TRIGEMINAL, FACIAL AND HYPOGLOSSAL CRANIAL NERVES

FACIAL NERVES  Now viewing : Figure 17

Figure 17 - Schematic sagittal drawing of the facial nerve

Schematic sagittal drawing of the facial nerve from the internal auditory meatus to the foramen stylomastoid.

1.  The facial nerve lies in the anterosuperior aspect of the lateral end of the internal acoustic meatus.

4.  The facial nerve then runs inferovertically in the third part of the facial canal (mastoid segment) and exits at the base of the skull through the stylomastoid foramen.

2.  The facial nerve then
runs forward in the first part
of the facial canal
(petrous segment).
It is a short segment swinging anteriorly above the cochlea
 to the pit for the
genicular ganglion.
3.  The facial nerve turns sharply backward in the second part of the facial canal (tympanic segment) along the medial wall of the tympanic cavity above the cochlea and vestibular window and below the lateral semicircular canal.  As the nerve reaches the posterior limb of the lateral semicircular canal at pyramid eminence, it bends inferiorly to enter the third part of the facial canal (mastoid segment).
