They rarely invade bone and only about 5% of the tumors develop nodal metastases during the course of the disease. Nodal metastases is more prevalent in epitheloid sarcoma, synovial sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and clear cell sarcoma. Approximately 5% to 10% of patients may have disseminated disease at presentation and the lung is the most common site of metastatic disease. (5)


75 year-old man with malignant fibrous histiocytoma of left thigh. Axial T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) MR image (3000/85 [TR/effective TE]) reveals a large tumor in the thigh which abuts but does not invade the underlying femoral cortex.
