A Career as a Histotechnician

Histotechnology is a specialty in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences. The specialty is devoted to the application of theoretical knowledge and practical techniques in biologic and chemical sciences in the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists. The diagnosis rendered by a pathologist provides essential information for attending physicians in the treatment and care of their patients.

The Histotechnician works in hospitals, medical schools, schools of veterinary medicine, research laboratories, private independent laboratories, industry and governmental agencies. In addition to performing a wide variety of laboratory tasks, the Histotechnician may also serve in management, supervision and education.

The rapidly growing specialty offers a variety of opportunities including advanced training and application in electron microscopy, histochemistry and flow cytometry.
