Department of Biostatistics

Section of Bioinformatics

Established in January 2000, the Bioinformatics group is a component of the Cancer Genomics Program at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and is comprised of a core of researchers and analysts within the Department of Biostatistics in the Basic Sciences Division.

Mission Statement

The Bioinformatics group will develop statistically rigorous solutions for the design and analysis of experiments within the Cancer Genomics Program, and will provide data analysis, acquisition, curation and retrieval tools to complement the laboratory services offered by the Cancer Genomics Program.
Current Projects

A database for the storage and analysis of gene expression array data is under development by this group. The database will be utilized for arrays produced by the Cancer Genome's core facilities, as well as commercial arrays.

M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Bioinformatics

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is committed to the development of collaborative efforts in bioinformatics among academic and research institutions within the Texas Medical Center and the Houston community. M. D. Anderson sponsored a Houston Forum on Cancer Genomics and Informatics on February 19, 2000. The goals of the Forum were: (1) to review the current status of cancer genomics and informatics efforts (focusing on gene expression studies); (2) to identify areas of joint investigation in the Houston genomics and informatics community; and (3) to formulate a strategy for multi-institutional collaboration. The second annual forum on cancer genomics and informatics is in the planning stages for 2001.
