      Anderson Network Phone: Quiz

      Anderson Network Phone Quiz

      Scenario 3

      New Caller- STEVE
      Volunteer- CATHY
      STEVE: Hello
CATHY: Hi, is this Steve? My name is Cathy and I am a volunteer from M. D. Anderson- the Anderson Network. I understand that you want to speak with someone who has a similar diagnosis.
STEVE: Yes, I did call the Network. I have melanoma- stage 4. My original spot was on my back but they have also found it in my lymph nodes and liver. Can you tell me about your experience?
CATHY: Like you, I was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma two years ago. The melanoma was on my foot but it also went to my liver. I took chemotherapy, immunotherapy and had surgery. What about you? Have you started treatment?
STEVE: I have started my treatment. I am going to a local oncologist in my town here in Utah. I really don't like my doctor. He never tells me anything, his office doesn't return my calls and he told me once that I should just go home and prepare my will. I don't know what to do.
How would you respond to STEVE:
A:  "Maybe you should just follow his directions and not ask so many questions."
B:  "Wow, that is no good."
C:  "I am so sorry to hear that. Have you thought about getting a second opinion? You might want to look and see if there are any comprehensive cancer centers in your area. It is important to have a good relationship with your doctor."
      : Call continues...
STEVE: Where do you get your treatment?
CATHY: I went to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
STEVE: Do you like it there? Do you think that I should go there? It's so far and I don't know if I could afford it. Do you think I will live if I go there?
How would you answer Steve's questions?
A:  "I do like M. D. Anderson. I have a good doctor and received great care. You can call askMDAnderson to learn more about becoming a patient. If you can't make it there, perhaps you can find a comprehensive cancer center that is closer to you."
B:  "You have to go to M. D. Anderson!"
      : Call continues...
STEVE: I think there is a cancer center in Salt Lake City which is close to me. I will see if I can find out more about it.
CATHY: That is a great idea!

The call ends and Cathy gives Steve her phone number. Steve calls Cathy several times during the next week and as time progresses, Steve is calling Cathy at least once a day. Cathy is happy to offer encouragement but the excessive amounts of calls are becoming overwhelming to Cathy.

How would you handle this situation?
A:  "Call the Anderson Network staff and let them know."
B:  "Yell at Steve and tell him to never call you again."
C:  "Explain to Steve that you don't mind talking to him periodically but calling everyday is too much."
