A cytogenetic technologist
is a member of the health care team, utilizing a strong background
in the sciences to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of
patients.
Cytogenetic technologists have a wide range of career options.
They are employed in cancer centers, pediatric and genetic
counseling clinics, pharmaceutical companies, chemical industries,
molecular cytogenetic laboratories, research laboratories,
computer imaging sales and development, molecular diagnostic
laboratories, and biotechnology companies.
Whatever the interest of the individual, job opportunities
abound. The Human Genome Project has greatly affected genetic
testing at all levels. The discovery of new genes and the
identification of the DNA sequence and location of diagnostically
relevant genes has lead to the development of the new field
of molecular cytogenetics in recent years. It is now widely
accepted that most human disease is caused in part by a genetic
defect. Identification of these genetic abnormalities has
become an essential part in the medical treatment of patients
in many specialty institutions across the country.
According to a recent salary survey by the Association of
Genetic Technologists the starting salary for a certified
cytogenetic technologist ranges between $24,000 - $34,000.
The average salary for laboratory supervisor is $44,540.
