While many technologists choose to work in hospital laboratories, other opt to develop new testing procedures in diagnostic and research laboratories. Technologists with leadership ability and administrative skills manage the laboratory operations. Those interested in computer technology use their laboratory knowledge and skills in the management of laboratory information systems. Others provide educational programs to prepare the technologists for the future. There are even opportunities for technologists to serve as self-employed consultants.

Whatever the interest of the individual, job opportunities abound. Due to an increased number of diverse testing sites, and aging population, and the development of highly specialized testing procedures, there is a need for qualified medical technologists.

According to a recent professional journal article the starting salary for a bench technologist ranges between $27,040 - $38,480. The average salary for laboratory supervisor is $41,184 and for a laboratory manager $50,544.
