Garrett
L. Walsh, M.D.
Garrett L. Walsh, M.D. was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He attended
Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario where he received both his Bachelor
of Arts (Life Sciences) in 1979 and his M.D. degree in 1983. He completed
his surgical internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, at the University of Toronto,
Canada (1983-1984) and his General Surgical Residency at the Royal Victoria
Hospital, McGill University in Montreal (1984-1988). During this time he
did research on the use of skeletal muscle to assist failing hearts and
completed a Master of Science degree at McGill (1988). He went on to continue
his training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at McGill and was chief
resident at the Montreal General Hospital, The Royal Victoria Hospital and
the Montreal Children's Hospital from 1988-1990.
Dr. Walsh is board
certified in Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He
is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons,
and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine Board.
He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in Thoracic
Surgery.
He joined the staff
of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University
of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in September 1990
as a Faculty Associate. In 1991 he was promoted to Assistant Surgeon and
Assistant Professor of Surgery. In 1996 he was promoted to the position
of Associate Surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery. In 2001 he was
promoted to the position of Professor of Surgery. He received the prestigious
1999 Faculty Senate Award for Patient Care. He holds a joint appointment
with the Harris County District (Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital).
Dr. Walsh has a
strong commitment to residency, nursing and patient education. He has
presented several hundred lectures on all aspects of surgery of the
chest, has published extensively in peer reviewed journals, and has
authored or co-authored 30 book chapters. He has served on many institutional
committees, serves as the surgical representative and Vice-Chairman
for the Ethics committee, and has collaborated on over 30 research protocols.
Dr. Walsh is equally devoted to the mission of M. D. Anderson.

Clinical
Interests:
Dr. Walsh's major
clinical interests include complex surgeries on the lung, trachea, esophagus,
and mediastinal organs. He serves as a consultant for many other surgical
disciplines for advanced tumors that invade vascular structures and
require resection or reconstruction. In conjunction with the departments
of neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, he has extensive experience
with exposure of all levels of the spine for the removal of tumors involving
the vertebral column. He has considerable experience with the use of
lasers to remove tumors involving the airways, endoscopic techniques
including stent placements, and minimally-invasive video assisted thoracic
surgical procedures.
