The purpose of this study is to investigate patterns of pain treatment in patients with advanced cancer.

Our specific goals are:

1) To assess the feasibility of using insurance claims data for descriptive studies of analgesic pain treatment patterns

2) To assess the concordance between insurance claims data and medical record documentation of pain treatment

3) To determine whether pain treatment practices differ based on state prescription policies

4) To determine whether pain treatment practices differ based on various demographic characteristics such as age and minority status

Methods

This study will consist of a retrospective analysis of private insurance claims data. Measures will include analgesic prescription data, state prescription policy data, and demographic data.
