Who is Eligible for a
Screening Mammogram?
- Women aged 40 or older should be screened annually.
- Women aged 30 to 40 will not be screened unless they have a first-degree relative (mother or sister) who has had breast cancer diagnosed before age 50. The "10-year rule" (that is, with a relative diagnosed at age 42, eligibility begins at age 32) will be applied. No other women under age 40 will be eligible for screening mammography, due to dense breast tissue.
- Women who are currently undergoing treatment, or who have a history of treatment for breast cancer, can be screened if they have had a unilateral mastectomy. They will not be screened if they received a lumpectomy and/or radiation treatment.
- No pregnant or breast-feeding women will receive a mammogram.
- Women with breast implants require special views and should have a diagnostic mammogram (call 713/792-2702 to make an appointment at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center).
